Charles Johnson is the president and creator of Dexter
Sport Science and Powerstar.
His interest in sports nutritionals and supplements began while weight-training
in the army. Numerous ads appeared in sports magazines for companies selling
sports supplements and he began to consistently use these products to
enhance his workouts.
He was firmly convinced in the importance of supplements
to improve gains and energy. After leaving the army, he began selling
supplements; starting out small "out of the trunk of his car"
and then obtaining his wholesale license. Dexter Sports Supplements was
created December 1990 and incorporated in October 1992.
The business began advertising in body building and workout magazines
in Spring 1991 while being operated out of Charles' private residence.
He soon moved the business to a larger facility on Carthage St. in Sanford,
NC in June 1992. As the business grew, he was able to build and occupy
a large warehouse in Carthage, NC in 1993.
Powerstar, the Dexter Sports Supplements house brand, was founded in 1994
and was granted a federally registered trademark in October 1995. The
house brand was created to offer much better values to customers with
formulas that mirror much more expensive products while also increasing
the profitability of the company.
In addition to managing his business, Charles was also very busy training
and competing in body building. He attributed his success to the use of
his products and modeled in the company's many catalogs over the years.
He has competed in over 40 contests in 8 eastern U.S. states, always placing
in the top three and winning 4 Overall Bests in his category. These victories
were used to endorse his products and contributed to the increased popularity
of the Powerstar brand.
Not content with just his Body Building success, he began competitive
sprinting in 1995. He competed in over 20 meets in 7 eastern U.S. states,
with gold medals in several meets including the 1999 USATF Midwest Outdoor
Championships 200 & 400 meter and the 1999 USATF Midwest Indoor Championships
55 & 400 meter sprints. This also led to expansion of the Powerstar
line to include products targeted to endurance and recovery.
Dexter Sports Supplements and Powerstar continue to market products to
the end user consumer via catalog mailings, the company website and email
campaigns sent to an opt-in mailing list.
